Annual Meeting
On July 11th ’07, this event was once more held at The Old Goods Shed, Alresford Station, Alresford - as it had proved such a suitable venue last year.
HMS therapists came from all over the Hampshire area and beyond, to present a short summary of their work with HMS during the past year. There were also reports from Tim Fell, HMS chairman, and from Beccy Read, HMS co-ordinator. Following some light refreshments we had a chance to discuss future branch plans.
News from the MusicSpace Trust: Gary Burn, appointed MusicSpace Charity Director in April this year, attended the meeting to hear about our therapy work locally, and to report on developments since he took up the post. Funding is of prime concern, and Gary has many plans in the pipeline in seeking to address these vital issues which are needed to be resolved to ensure the survival of The MusicSpace Trust as a provider of community-based music therapy.
Gary has already involved himself with our team, attending our April management team meeting, meeting Beccy and the other branch co-ordinators, and even popping into the HMS office prior to starting for MusicSpace - as he previously worked with Learning Through Landscapes, based at The Castle, Winchester. Gary has considerable charity sector managerial and fundraising experience, and has positive plans to raise the profile of MusicSpace nationally, to move our charity forward and to provide much needed branch support. Welcome Gary Burn!!

Grant and appeal successes:
GRANT SUCCESS for therapy in challenging behaviour:
HMS is grateful to Hampshire Police’s Crime Prevention, which has once again pledged their support for music therapy, with £3,000 – their maximum award –to be used at the Pupil Referral Unit in Farnborough, to ensure the continuation of therapy with referred individuals to Christmas ’07. Currently 5 are seen once a week, and this continues a much-valued service which began here 3 years ago with funds provided through Rushmoor Healthy Living.
Therapy for adults with acquired brain injury, Portsmouth area:
Following the collapse of funding from Portsmouth City Council in March this year, we have a small amount of seed funding to restart group-work with adults who are similarly affected, in the area.
HMS is grateful to local businesses and rotary clubs in the Portsmouth area who have donated over £500 to supporting this work which was so valued by the group members.

HMS FILM

‘Communication and therapy through music’
…the Hampshire MusicSpace DVD,
…has now finished it’s initial editing and is soon to receive vital final tweakings.
Louise Neale working with a client.
We are very pleased to announce that Simon Hill, film editor, has finished his work on the HMS film. The result so far is a beautiful , moving, honest and real showing of our work, and has already wowed several audiences who previously knew nothing about music therapy. It does what music therapy itself does so well – communicates superbly without the use of many words. Beccy, who, with Simon, was the most involved overall in the film-making process, found the process of touring the therapy sites to assist with the filming, a most consolidating and moving experience. So much hard work goes into setting up and sustaining the work, that it was a joy to witness it being so much a part of the regular lives of so many establishments. And so positively endorsed, too! It certainly made her sometimes strange job of HMS co-ordinator seem totally worthwhile!
Since filming last July, Beccy spent 2 weekends helping with the editing. It was wonderful, she says, to watch it taking shape, and formalising our ideas into film.
Further still images from the film will follow on this site soon.
If you would be interested to:
- add your name to the list for receiving a DVD once it becomes available,
- receive a presentation on music therapy which includes the DVD,
…please contact Beccy Read.

From the therapy team:
Thanks to Louise for providing locum cover while Karen is busy with little Nathaniel until Christmas.
From the management team:
At our Annual Meeting we said a very fond farewell to 3 of our long-time supporters Margaret and Tom Merriam, and Sarah Lloyd. The Merriams have been with us since the pre-HMS dark ages of 1995(!!!), advising, listening, liaising, representing, and calming us all over the years. Sarah joined later, through the Winchester Volunteer Bureau, and faithfully set up our first web site. This has proved an invaluable tool for promotion We will miss their fantastic support, and wish them well for the future.
Thank you, Margaret and Tom and Sarah.
Anyone interested in joining the management team , which meets monthly in central Hampshire, please contact Beccy at HMS for more details. Here’s a chance for all those local community pillars to support a local charity.
We would especially like to hear from anyone with charity / fundraising / Health Trust / Local Education Authority expertise.
From the office:
